One of the most confusing parts of applying to art and design schools is building a portfolio—and every discipline has different expectations. Whether you’re applying for Fine Art, Animation, Architecture, or Fashion Design, knowing what to include (and avoid) is key to building a strong, discipline-specific application.

This post breaks down portfolio requirements by subject, with checklists and tips that simplify the process for students—and help parents and teachers support them too.

🖌️ 1. Fine Art Portfolio

Ideal for: BFA, Studio Art, Painting, Drawing programs

What to Include:

✔ Life drawings (figures, still life)

✔ Personal projects and sketchbook pages

✔ Conceptual works (themes, symbolism)

✔ Experiments with materials (ink, charcoal, mixed media)

✔ Observational drawing (from life, not photos)

Tip: Art schools love to see your process—not just finished work. Include sketchbook scans or process photos.

🎞️ 2. Animation Portfolio

Ideal for: 2D/3D Animation, Game Art, Motion Design

What to Include:

✔ Storyboards

✔ Character design sheets (turnarounds, expressions)

✔ Animatics or short clips

✔ Gesture drawings (quick poses)

✔ Background design samples

Tip: Even if you’re applying for 3D animation, hand-drawn fundamentals matter. Show your understanding of movement and storytelling.

🖍️ 3. Graphic Design Portfolio

Ideal for: Communication Design, Visual Communication, Branding

What to Include:

✔ Typography samples

✔ Logo and branding projects

✔ Editorial layouts or posters

✔ UI/UX mockups

✔ Conceptual design work with rationale

Tip: Include explanations—what problem were you solving? How did your design achieve that?

🏛️ 4. Architecture Portfolio

Ideal for: Architecture, Interior Design, Environmental Design

What to Include:

✔ Observational drawing and perspective studies

✔ Design process (sketches → models → final visuals)

✔ Floor plans or diagrams

✔ 3D models or mockups (digital or hand-built)

✔ Concept boards

Tip: Show your ability to think in space, structure, and scale. Keep your presentation neat and consistent.
